Paul Simon wrote a song called "Satin Summer Nights" that starts, "I been sleeping on the roof of my building, it's cooler than the street". If only I had a roof. But I think he was wrong about the streets- I saw two Fringe shows tonight (a samurai sword fest and a spiritual modern dance collage, both good), and on my way back to the subway around 10:30, the weather was heavenly. Cool breeze, shade everywhere, quiet (well, what passes for quiet in NYC). Why is everybody sleeping? They're missing the only time of day it's worth walking around outside. I got to my subway stop at Astor Place, and I saw everyone languishing outside the entrance. Train down perhaps? No- the heat, a strong hot breeze blowing up from the platform, all the way up the stairs to the outside. No thank you. I kept right on walking.
